Discussing Ideas face-to-face - 'Pie and Pint' and other Meetings

Pie and Pint Meeting As well as providing an online means of developing ideas, Probably42 is equally about discussion and development of ideas face-to-face.

Most of us enjoy a chat, perhaps over a drink and a bite to eat, and putting the world to rights.

We want to encourage that idea, both as an enjoyable activity and as a means of achieving something worthwhile. We’ve found that a small amount of discipline applied to our chats can turn them from inconsequential ramblings into practical ideas for improvement. So once you get round to setting a Group up do take a look at our Meeting Hints and Tips page

As an example, three of us started off meeting once a month in a very pleasant country pub which does good food (this has now grown to 7 of us). The idea being to choose a main topic to discuss and see if we could come up with ideas to improve things. We chose as our first topic Elderly Social Care, as there had just been the furore over suggested changes in the Conservative manifesto. We found that we had a very enjoyable time and we also felt we came up with some good ideas, which are summarised at http://www.probably42.net/group/topic/view/3/3/social-care-in-old-age (opens in new window).

And that’s the objective: have a good time, discuss some big issue and if something useful does come out of it, publish it on Probably 42 for others to comment on, add to, adopt etc.

Although we don’t want to exclude anyone, we would particularly recommend this as a very sociable retirement activity which is both enjoyable and useful and adds to keeping one’s mind active.

In our case we meet in a country pub we all like at 11.00 until about 1.00. We start with coffee and progress to a drink and a bite to eat around lunch time. We agree the topic we are going to discuss on email beforehand and one of us does a little bit of research and produces a short list of things we might want to discuss as part of it. Someone keeps a note of any good ideas and puts them up on Probably42 afterwards.

As a group we have varied political views and we try and ensure we discuss the pros and cons of any ideas in a considered way, free from assertions and respectful of one another’s opinions – very much in line with the spirit of Probably42.

We hope you’ll think it’s something you might like to try with some friends. You can set up a Group on Probably42 to publish any good ideas. See http://www.probably42.net/groups.

We’ve come to call our meetings P42 ‘Pie and Pint’ discussions but if you come up with an alternative name let us know.
