The topic and agenda for August is:

Proposals to Reform, Improve Productivity and Fund Public Services – using DWP as a case study

There seems to be a consensus amongst Think Tanks that Public Sector reform is the only way forward and this seems to be echoed by the Government both before the election and after.

The Tony Blair Institute has gone one step further and produced an excellent paper: Governing in the Age of AI: Reimagining the UK Department for Work and Pensions (institute.global). We thoroughly recommend at least having a look at the Executive Summary. Probably scan the rest but some of the stats are eye-opening both current situation and potential savings.

    Agenda

    • What are our perceptions of the state of Public Services?
    • What are the current challenges and inefficiencies both across Public Services and specific to DWP?
    • How can technology, digital tools and particularly AI help to address these in both the short term – less than 5 years and the longer term - 20 years? What productivity improvement should we be aiming for
    • What should the objectives and critical success factors of implementation be?
    • What are the barriers to implementation? What should the implementation strategy be? What suggestions/proposals would we make to help ensure success? How can it be funded?
    • What would the broader economic and social benefits be of successful implementation?
