The topic for this month is the UK Transport System.

What should it look like in the 21st century given pressures of climate change, UK environment, population growth, increased leisure time (maybe) and the opportunities of technology?

The following is a suggested agenda

    • What are the benefits of the current transport system?
    • What are the problems and shortfalls of the current Transport System for work (individuals and companies) and for leisure? Are the problems and potential solutions different for cities and suburbs v ‘outside town’?
    • What type and level of transport do we need over the next 50 years to meet demand but also to safeguard our children’s health, safeguard the environment and address climate change. Will demand increase or reduce?
    • What will the impact of technology and disruptive solutions be on the problems e.g. Uber, Virtual reality, Drones, Electric Cars, Hydrogen cars, Self-driving cars trucks and trains and planes? Are there other modes of transport we haven’t yet invented, or that are on the horizon e.g. Elon Musk’s Hyperloop and Transportation Tunnels, Hoverboards?
    • Can we reduce demands on travel and transport? Would this be a good thing?
