Ideas for our Future
Harnessing our joint Knowledge, Skills and Experience to address the big issues and opportunities of our time
The Artificial Intelligence Opportunity - how prepared are we?
We haven't visited this topic for about 3 years, when it hadn't yet penetrated the media. At the time we took part in a call for evidence by the House of Lords Select Committee on the topic. We also produced some ideas which figure in our current Manifesto of Ideas. We believed and still do that urgent Government action is needed to make sure that, not only do we realise the benefits for the good of all, but that we also avoid the potential pitfalls for society.
Our draft agenda is below. If you'd like to participate in one of our group discussions do sign up as a member.
You don't have to be particularly knowledgeable about the topic, we will provide a short layman's brief before the meeting.
Agenda
What is Artificial Intelligence and how far has it developed?
Share what specific uses we have seen implemented so far.
What sorts of AI are there?
How quickly will it develop to be all pervasive, as computer chips are today?
What are the barriers to implementation, and how can they be removed?
Is there anything AI won’t be able to do, or we won’t want it to do?
What are the good implications of AI?
How well are we placed in the UK in both research and deployment?
What are the potential issues and threats for society and can we prevent or alleviate them?
How do we ensure it is deployed for the good of all, rather than only benefitting the large hi-tech multi-national corporations that currently control and drive its deployment?
What are the most urgent actions we should take?
The output from the first of our discussion meetings on the topic is now available at http://www.probably42.net/documents/2/92/artificial-intelligence-in-2020-output-of-dt-group
Issue 10 of our 'Considered Document' on the subject of Artificial Intelligence is now available at http://www.probably42.net/documents/1/93/artificial-intelligence-managing-the-future.
It takes account of the Probably42 discussions on the topic and also updates the recommendations our submission to the House of Lords Select Committee on the subject 3 years ago.
The document looks at how we accelerate the benefits of AI, how we avoid or mitigate the downsides, how society is likely to be impacted and how Government, Organisations and Society need to adapt to ensure a good future for us and for our children and grandchildren.
